Tilly’s life is a living nightmare: she lives in a deserted flat with Queen Raat and her shapeshifting magpie family, forced to do everything they ask of her. That includes luring humans back to ‘The Roost’ so the magpies can rob them of anything that shines – they call them ‘Trinkets’ – then eat them alive. 

When Tilly finds that one of the trinkets contains memories of the real family she was stolen from, she and two young magpies make a daring escape. They find themselves on the unforgiving streets of London and tangled up in a world of ancient politics, wild shapeshifting animals and forbidden magic. But in order to save London, and possibly all of England from the Magpie Queen's wrath, Tilly may have to venture back to The Roost and defeat her tormentor with her own hands.
